i got the flu...
Thats rite.. influenza is currently reeking havoc with my body.. joint pains, fevers (i had a fever of 102 for two days straight, i couldn't break), dizziness, vomiting, anorexia, sore throat, cough.. u name it.. i've done in the last 50 odd hours.
Having the flu tho meant that i took monday from neuro, and took a half day today.. yeah! (there is always a silver lining.. )
all the match details:
i ranked Brown U 2nd.. NYU was first, Brown has the better program: night float, great faculty, residents,conferences and they dont treat u like slave labor. At NYU a lot of ur time is spent doing scut, they even have blood draw hour everyday in the morning. And the conferences arent so great, the philosophy is that u learn on the floor. The main reason i ranked NYU first was location, it would've been cool to live in the city again..(which is what makes a slightly above avg program so competitive) oh well. Everyone had told me to rank brown 1st anywaz.. it is Ivy league and NYU is not.
One of the major selling points about Brown is their AMAZING international health program. After dealing with tons of paperwork and consents to get to Costa Rica, i know exactly how much effort is put into setting these rotations up. At Brown, they HAVE A COORDINATOR that does just that: sets up international health electives. You just say where u wanna go, what u wanna do.. and everything else is done for u. NYU has no international health program at all... but at bellevue u get a good amount of exposure of foreigners in an urban environement... if u wanna experience a rural environment then ur kinda screwed there. i like to stay in the cities.. its safer for ur health.
So, if Brown's program is so superior why did they accept me and why is it equally competitive with NYU.. i did a better job interviewing at brown, i had research interests with the interviewer + NYU didnt hook me up with a nephrologist. the major issue is location. Providence is kinda in the middle of nowhere.. but Boston is nearby (1 hr away) and NYC is like 2 hrs away. Property value there is making a killing cuz providence is almost becoming a suburb of boston, people that work in boston are moving to providence. the city is very collegiate, and the downtown is pretty small,however, the high rises are very very nice.
next step.. buy a condo!
