Trauma
So i've been icognito recently since I went on senior surgery.. bane of all 4th year medical students. Senior surgery like ambulatory medicine is a senior requirement which is very pointless saying our grades have been sent. So this class counts for nothing and hence no one (including me) cares.
So what does senior surgery entail: 2 weeks of trauma and 2 weeks of ICU.
I got trauma first.. meaning i wake up at 4:45 to get here by 5:30. Well at least i wake up to eat for ramadan. Rest of the day.. wait for the trauma pager to go off.
So trauma.. supposedly pretty interesting..
here's some of what I've seen:
tonight 5 year old boy hit with car on bike (no helmet) huge nasty scalp laceration down to his calvarium (skull). He fractured his skull and has a tiny piece of metal stuck underneath the breakpoint. dont worry, his mental status is fine.. He may hae also ruptured his bladder.. we'll see.
b4..
lots of MVAs, drunk drivers and such.
a couple of cases of multiple (> 30) stab wounds most self inflicted
and about half of our service is motorcylce accidents.. i now believe motorcycles should be banned. They are inherently dangerous .. everyone who rides long enuf ends up in the ER. the medical cost alone must be staggering. Or Medical insurance should not cover for the injuries.. why should they cover the cost for someone's stupid decision.
From what i've seen Motorcycles => human road kill.
